Azadeh,

How long have you been with Moffatt & Nichol?
I’ve been with the firm for a little over 4 years.

How did you come to Moffatt & Nichol?
Just before graduation, the structural engineering department at UCSD had a job fair. Near the end of the job fair, one of the professors spoke about the Bay Bridge project where Moffatt & Nichol in a joint-venture is a lead designer. I was fascinated by the variety of work the firm seemed to do. I saw that two representatives from Moffatt & Nichol were collecting resumes after the presentation and I gave my resume to them.

What has kept you with the company?
The people I work with and the variety and challenges of the projects I get to work on keep me interested. Also, I’m achieving my career goals here and my hard work is being acknowledged.

What types of projects do you work on or have you worked on?
I work on a variety of structures projects from seismic analysis and retrofits to design of bridges, piers, underwater subway tubes, marine offshore platforms, and mooring structures. I have also worked on an LNG terminal.

How has your role developed?
A year and a half ago I was given an opportunity to lead a project. I am grateful to my supervisor who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to prove that I can lead a project from start to finish.

How has the company changed since you started?
There is more focus on educating engineers; the firm has implemented training through webinars. The firm has also grown the number of young engineers in our office and is nurturing their talent and allowing them to flourish. We have also added structural capabilities and we’re seeing more bridge projects.

Walter

How long have you been with Moffatt & Nichol?
I’ve been with the firm for almost 5 years.

How did you come to the company?
Our firm’s former chief economist, who has since retired, persuaded me to leave the financial sector and come to Moffatt & Nichol. He convinced me I would be able to do work that was more challenging and significant.

What has kept you with the company for so long?
The projects I’ve worked on, which range from freight movement, urban waterfronts & marinas, and energy, are very challenging and satisfying.

How has your role developed since you came?
In addition to my project work, I have had the opportunity to be involved with business development and help promote the firm’s work and bring in new business. I also speak at various industry conferences about trends in the financial sector to guide forecasts and investments in our industry. I also write occasionally for publications and have a monthly column in an industry magazine.

What types of projects do you work on or have you worked on?
Most of the projects I’ve been involved with have been strategic development plans for port authorities. I also frequently work on due diligence projects for private companies seeking to purchase terminals or for port authorities offering an operating concession

How has the company changed since you arrived?
Moffatt & Nichol has truly grown into a global company. When I started 5 years ago, there wasn’t a big need for me to communicate in other languages. That is no longer the case!

How would you describe the work environment?
Entrepreneurial and collaborative – I don’t know anyone who feels like they are stuck in a pigeonhole or would shy away from a challenging project at Moffatt & Nichol.

I feel I’ve been able to bring an almost immediate impact because of my experience and background. One of the things I’m most excited about in my role here is being able to mentor young engineering professionals.

What has kept you with the company for so long?
It sounds cliché, but I am fortunate to be in a position where every day brings a new challenge to the table, so the work is consistently interesting.

How has your role developed since you came?
I managed large projects in the firm’s New York office until I had the opportunity to move to Panama and support the branch office there. That led to an opportunity to open a new branch in Bogota, Colombia, where I am currently based.

What types of projects do you work on or have you worked on?
The work constantly varies so I have the opportunity to work on everything from container and coal terminal developments to marine structural repairs to transportation network studies.

How has the company changed since you arrived?
In terms of business ventures, the company has begun to focus on international work more than when I first joined, providing new and different challenges in both the acquisition and completion of projects.

In terms of work atmosphere, it really hasn’t changed – and I like that. Through good

economic times and rough ones, the company has maintained a small-company, family-like atmosphere fostering a sense of cooperation between employees and offices.

How would you describe the work environment?
The first thing that was immediately evident when I joined Moffatt & Nichol is how well the various offices and the employees within them worked together. As I mentioned, a strong cooperative spirit permeates the organization and one really can feel like part of something greater than the sum of its components. I think this comes from the maintenance of a family-business atmosphere, even as the company and the scale of the projects continue to grow.

How has your role developed since you started?
I came on with Moffatt & Nichol at the trough of the recession. The future was scary. Now, the scary thing is how to deliver even higher quality work product at an even lower price.

What types of projects do you work on or have you worked on?
I have been exposed to projects and programs in all six of the firm’s practice areas. I also assist the firm and its clients, trade organizations, and public sector entities on major governance, funding, and risk issues related to infrastructure development

How would you describe the work environment?
Let me use a coastal metaphor: Moffatt & Nichol thrives where the ocean waves of institutional and market forces collide with the rocky shoreline of engineering and science.

What about your role gives you the most satisfaction:
Visiting a Moffatt & Nichol office, listening and learning from smart and experienced people-whether engineers, planners, economists or business development professionals.

What separates Moffatt & Nichol from its competition?
Humility and honesty. The bigger any organization becomes, the harder it is to maintain those values. Moffatt & Nichol has maintained these values throughout their 60+-year legacy.

What has kept you with the company?
I’m able to work on a variety of challenging projects and also have the opportunity to take on more responsibility.

How has your role developed since you came?
Since this was a new office in a new region, I initially spent a lot of time on proposals, pursuing work. We have since won some very diverse and challenging projects that I’m currently managing.

What types of projects do you work on or have you worked on?
I’ve worked on a variety of marine facilities; namely, dry bulk terminals, container terminals, liquid bulk terminals, and marinas. Our scope has ranged from market studies to site selection, concept development, coastal studies, navigation simulations, basic engineering, and detailed engineering.

How would you describe the work environment?
Despite being scattered throughout the world, all Moffatt & Nichol offices work together as a united team. It is a very friendly work environment with people throughout the offices helping each other out on a day-to-day basis.

How has the company changed since you arrived?
The company has grown in size from approximately 300 to more than 500, and expanded geographically, expanded its practices to six areas, and implemented an operations committee that is separate from the Board of Directors

What about your role gives you the most satisfaction?
Because I have the opportunity to work on a variety of different projects, I feel I have become morewell-rounded as an engineer.

How did you come to the firm?

What has kept you with the company for so long?
Besides the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, the people I work with make my job enjoyable. Those who have more experience are willing to take time to share their knowledge with younger engineers.

How has your role developed since you came?
I was hired as an entry level engineer. I’ve grown to be the lead engineer on projects, working directly with clients and training younger engineers.

What types of projects do you work on or have you worked on
I mainly work on transportation/civil projects. I’ve worked on projects involving local roadway/streetscape rehabilitation, and highway, ferry terminals, and rail design. Specifically , I work on projects involving roadway geometrics, alternatives analysis, grading and drainage design, earthwork calculations, pavement structural section design, construction cost estimates, and utility design and coordination. Currently, I am working a complex rail line extension.

How has the company changed since you arrived?
We’ve grown in size and now have offices in international locations.

What separates Moffatt & Nichol from its competition?
Because Moffatt & Nichol is not a huge corporation, employees feel like they are not just a number. We also have a lot of people who have worked for the company for years (or decades!); it’s a good indication that people enjoy working here.

Matt is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering at UC San Diego. He graduated with a Civil Engineering degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Matt joins the San Diego office and will be working closely with the structural group.

Matt decided to study engineering because he enjoys the mix of creativity, practicality, and analytical thinking it takes to solve engineering challenges. After interning with Moffatt & Nichol for the past two summers, Matt has worked with various structural engineering projects from a steel bridge to concrete and wood loading trestles. With each project, he has learned important lessons that he would not have learned in his classes.
In his spare time, Matt enjoys spending time in the outdoors either hiking or mountain biking. After completing graduate school, he looks forward to having a little bit more free time on the weekend.

How long have you been with firm?
I have been with Moffatt & Nichol for three great years.

How did you come to Moffatt & Nichol?
I placed my resume online at monster.com, and Dave Lowy, Moffatt & Nichol’s internal recruiter, found me and showed me that the firm would be the place for me.

Victor
CADD Civil Technician

What has kept you with the company for so long?
I’ve stayed with the firm for so long because of the challenging work and the great people.

What position did you have when you started?
I started as a civil cadd technician

How has your role developed since you came?
Ive grown from just a tech to an interim network coordinator, and the cadd manager for the San Diego office

What types of projects do you work on or have you worked on?
I have worked on various dredge projects and a few civil projects

How has the company changed since you arrived?
Luckily the company has not changed much since I have been here, and I am thankful for that.

How would you describe the work environment?
I see my environment like a family business; we get along well for a common purpose.

What about your role gives you the most satisfaction?
Being able to do the things I love doing in an environment that will allow me to do that brings me a lot of satisfaction.

What separates Moffatt & Nichol from its competition?
Many companies do the same or similar work as Moffatt & Nichol but I believe that the work environment here makes us far superior to other companies
