Moffatt & Nichol GPA Project Wins Georgia Engineering Honor Award

SAVANNAH, GA, April 1, 2011— Georgia Engineering Alliance presented Moffatt & Nichol with an Honor Award in Engineering Excellence for the Cross Terminal Road & Bridge Project. As part of an ongoing contract, Moffatt & Nichol provided planning, design, and construction support for the new $6.6-Million, 2-mile roadway corridor called the “Cross Terminal Road,” that provides direct access from the north end of the terminal to the south end.

“I believe this project may prove to have the most impact on productivity and safety of any single infrastructure project at Garden City Terminal since conversion to a container terminal,” said Wilson Tillotson, P.E., GPA Senior Director of Engineering & Facilities Maintenance.

The Georgia Ports Authority’s FOCUS 2015 Plan for the Garden City Terminal included a new roadway corridor that includes five lanes wide with two lanes in each direction and a turning lane. The project included the installation of an approximately two-mile long asphaltic concrete roadway across the terminal that not only improved congested intersections, but was also constructed while maintaining terminal operations.

Moffatt & Nichol provided full-time support throughout various construction sequences–demolition, utility relocation, grading, bridge construction, paving, striping, signage, and traffic control, in order to minimize impacts on the operations of the terminal. Construction of the Cross Terminal Road was completed with virtually no negative impact to the operations of the terminal, under budget and two weeks ahead of schedule.
