Former Port Executive Joins Moffatt & Nichol
Long Beach, California, April 10, 2017 – Moffatt & Nichol is pleased to welcome, Doug Thiessen, P.E., Port Engineering Group Leader, to its Long Beach, California office. Mr. Thiessen brings with him a wealth of port expertise and will be working to enhance the firm’s execution and delivery of Ports and Marine Terminal work. Additionally, he will focus on project development for large public port, transportation, and military work.
Mr. Thiessen has more than 34 years of experience in the public sector. Most recently, he was the Managing Director of Engineering for the Port of Long Beach managing all port engineering, construction, and maintenance projects while overseeing an annual capital improvement budget of more than $500 million. Notable projects handled under his leadership include converting the former Long Beach Naval Station to the port’s largest container terminal, delivering the Middle Harbor automated container terminal, and initiating the Gerald Desmond Bridge replacement. Additionally, he worked for 15 years with the Port of Los Angeles on a wide variety of waterfront rehabilitation and container terminal projects.
While in government, Mr. Thiessen was chairman of the Ports and Harbors Committee for the American Society of Civil Engineers, chair of the California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference, and a member of the Alameda Corridor Operating Committee. He was the executive director of the intermodal container transportation facility (ICTF) joint powers authority.

Mr. Thiessen has his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Southern California.
