bridges

capabilities and expertise

To date, we have provided such services for more than 500 bridges including such notable projects as:

  • East Span Replacement, San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge, California – under construction
  • Alameda Transportation Corridor, Southern California – a $2.4 billion dedicated freight railroad and industrial expressway connecting the Ports of LA/LB with inland continental rail heads
  • El Toro “Y”, Southern California, California – one of the world’s largest freeway interchanges

In addition to the typical structural engineering services associated with bridge design, Moffatt & Nichol also offers broad and detailedexperience with finite element analysis for earthquake and beyond-design-basis loadings of such structures which is utilized in both design of new and retrofit of critically-important structures.

roads & bridges

Moffatt & Nichol offers a full range of planning, design, project funding and management services for bridge and highway projects.

Moffatt & Nichol offers special expertise in project economics and finance, program management, seismic analysis, deep marine foundations, intermodal systems, vessel impact, and scour analysis. These specialized services allow us to provide clients with a high level of value-added services for the complete range of project development – planning through design and construction.

In addition to conventional highway design, our structural capabilities include inspection, planning, analysis, design, and construction document preparation for the rehabilitation, retrofit or new construction of bridges, trestles and grade separations. Moffatt & Nichol has planned or designed more than 500 bridges ranging from one of the world’s largest freeway to freeway interchanges, the El Toro “Y” in Irvine, California to the $5.5 billion Oakland Bay Bridge Replacement project.

scour analysis

Moffatt & Nichol has specialized in-house expertise on tidal and river mechanics, sediment transport/scour analysis, coastal engineering and hydrology and hydraulics. Applying this expertise together with our 1-D, 2-D and 3-D advance numerical modeling capability, we can evaluate scouring potential for bridges at diversely different site conditions. We have performed scour screening of more than 1000 bridges using FHWA procedures, performed scour analysis of more than 50 bridges, and developed design countermeasures for many scour-critical bridges. On the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge, Moffatt & Nichol recently performed hydrodynamic numerical modeling and physical model testing to forecast the scouring potential. The level of scouring was substantially less than predicted by using empirical formula.

In addition, Moffatt & Nichol is a recognized international leader in the analysis and design of ship collision avoidance and protection systems.
