As a member of the Alameda Corridor Engineering Team joint venture, Moffatt & Nichol provided planning, engineering, and program management services for the $2.4 billion Alameda Corridor program from inception in 1990 through commencement of operations and revenue service in 2002.
Chatham Yard Intermodal Container Transfer Facility
Under an ongoing professional services contract with the Georgia Ports Authority, Moffatt & Nichol completed planning, design, permitting,and construction management of a strategic new intermodal container transfer facility at the Garden City Terminal in Savannah, GA.
Hawaii Superferry
Moffatt & Nichol provided project management, technical review, and design services for the development of the Hawaii Superferry service, which included four new ferry terminals located at state-owned harbor facilities on Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii.
Heartland Corridor
Moffatt & Nichol played a critical role in garnering funding and support for the Heartland Corridor, a public–private venture to increase freight capacity and decrease transit time between the Port of Virginia and Midwest markets.
San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge East Span Replacement
As part of a joint venture, Moffatt & Nichol provided engineering design and project management services for the replacement of the 2.2-mile-long, dual segment, parallel-deck eastern portion of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, which connects Yerba Buena Island and Oakland.transportation
deep foundations
Moffatt & Nichol provides specialized services for deep foundations in marine and water environments. Large marine and riverine engineering projects require designers to coordinate multiple engineering disciplines and understand construction methods at the time of concept design and type selection. Challenges include weak soil conditions, and the methods in which large and heavy structures can be constructed using floating equipment that is vulnerable to winds, waves and currents. These waves and currents can also scour the structure foundations to great depths. Finally, large vessels may impact the structure, imposing extremely large loads. Moffatt & Nichol’s Marine Foundations Group is unique in its ability to provide comprehensive engineering analysis and design that covers, integrates and balances all of these specialized service areas.
