International Transportation Services (ITS) has broken ground on the Moffatt & Nichol-designed Pier G Slip Fill Project at the Port of Long Beach.
The project will add around 19 acres of new land and create a new berth large enough to handle some of the world container fleet’s biggest vessels. Moffatt & Nichol, as project designer, provided services from concept study and field investigations, through detailed design, permitting, and the bid process.
Project manager Reza Alamir said: “Moffatt & Nichol has a long history at Pier G and the ITS terminal, and we are excited to see this transformative project move forward.
“The South Slip Fill project is an excellent example of how new land can be created to build a new wharf and backland designed to efficiently move the throughput volume generated by larger container ships.”
The project, which includes approximately 2.5 million cubic yards of fill, dike, and surcharge material, construction of a new wharf at Berth G 234, and backland development within the slip fill project footprint will increase terminal’s throughput capacity and ready the terminal to welcome 18,000 TEU vessel calls.
