The Russia-Ukraine war has led to trade barriers being imposed, impacting the trade moving across Lithuania.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications for the Republic of Lithuania engaged Moffatt & Nichol to identify new trade routes the country could target to recover volumes lost because of the sanctions.
Moffatt & Nichol undertook a freight market study to identify opportunities to integrate the Lithuanian transport sector into transport chains in new markets, with the aim of assessing the potential for diversification of Lithuaniaโs transport sector in the short and long-term. ย The network includes road, rail, airports, seaports and inland waterways, with roads being the primary mode.
We provided advice on how the country could increase freight flows across all transport modes and developed a strategy to improve its competitiveness. The assessment included 10-year trade projections, stakeholder engagement and use of Moffatt & Nicholโs Network Analyst too.
A second phase of the report provided a three-year action plan for the government, identifying eight trade flows for it to target within the current transport network. Finally, a phase three report defined an action plan for the next 10 years, considering which network expansions could benefit Lithuania and whether the country can play a different role in global supply chains.
