Manzanillo International Terminal Container Yard Densification

Manzanillo International Terminal Container Yard, Panama
๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฆ Colon, Panama

Located near the Atlantic entrance of the Panama Canal, SSA MARINE MIT is a premier container transshipment facility, featuring over 2,000 meters of quayside equipped with state-of-the-art gantry cranes and advanced computer and management systems.

As one of Latin America's most important port terminals, SSA MARINE MIT continuously pioneers technological advancements to optimize operations.

A key initiative at SSA MARINE MIT is the Container Yard Densification Project, for which Moffatt & Nichol provided comprehensive infrastructure design support for the new Automatic Stacking Cranes (ASC), distinct from the equipment design. M&N's scope of work included site electrification to support the deployment of zero-emission ASC equipment. The existing yard, which was a conventional container yard, required extensive electrical rehabilitation. M&N designed over 2,000 meters of crane rails, crane beams, crane stops, tie-downs, and reefer racks. Given the operational demands of the ASCs, special attention was paid to trackwork tolerances while preserving existing pavements and utilities--including storm drainage, sanitary sewer, electrical, and telecommunications systems--throughout construction.

Moffatt & Nichol incorporated essential elements such as concrete barriers, gates, and fencing to prevent unauthorized access to reefer and other container handling areas.

The new ASCs enable faster and more efficient container movement, significantly reducing operational costs and waiting times while enhancing the quality of service offered to clients.
