Moffatt & Nichol joins ADB’s maritime decarbonization effort as technical partner

Moffatt & Nichol is proud to announce its participation as a technical partner in the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Maritime Decarbonization Initiative, a regional effort to accelerate the sustainable and climate-resilient transition of ports and shipping across developing member countries (DMCs).

The partnership was formally marked during the 58th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank, which took place in Milan from May 4-7, 2025. ADB has launched a new funding framework for maritime decarbonization and green ports, including the establishment of the Sustainable and Resilient Maritime Fund. Following the signing ceremony, Miluše Tichavska and Nick Lewis participated as both contributors and panelists during a series of roundtables focused on infrastructure resilience, financing, and green maritime transition.

“Moffatt & Nichol brings valuable technical insight to ADB’s flagship Sustainable and Resilient Maritime Initiative,” said Duncan McIntosh, Senior Regional Maritime Specialist for ADB. “Their expertise will help ensure that investments—through the forthcoming Fund and beyond—are grounded in practical design and implementation, enabling our client countries to develop resilient, future-ready port infrastructure.”

The initiative responds to a pressing global challenge. With 90% of global trade moving by sea, maritime transport accounts for 3% of global GHG emissions, placing it on par with the world’s sixth largest emitting country. Seaports—especially those in developing countries, which handle 60% of maritime goods—face significant exposure to sea-level rise and climate impacts. Addressing emissions and vulnerability at the port level is an essential step to building a more sustainable and resilient global supply chain.

Miluše Tichavska, Green Ports & Sustainability Director, said, “This partnership represents a meaningful step toward aligning infrastructure development with sustainability goals. With ADB, we’re working to ensure that ports are not just efficient — but resilient, future-ready, and a vital part of the solution to global decarbonization.”

Moffatt & Nichol will contribute expertise in port planning, sustainability and decarbonization technical innovation, and infrastructure resilience to support ADB’s goals. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment: to drive sustainable growth through climate-ready infrastructure and meaningful partnerships. Moffatt & Nichol is proud to stand alongside ADB in shaping a greener, more resilient maritime future.
